Legends of the Black Wolf

The Tale of Trevell, the Last Bearer of Othlar

In the year 967, Trevell the Hasty, the last champion to bear Othlar, was lost to us - and with him the hammer Othlar as well. Only now can we discern the truth of what happened.

The tale starts with the vile necromancer Shile Tan and his horde ravaging the lands of Norsca. Lord Wolf sent forth a call to arms to repel this foul blight from his lands.

In the beginning the fighting was harsh, with the magics of Shile Tan breaking the brave heart and shattering the strong mind of many a good warrior. As the call to arms was answered, the might of Norsca was brought to bear on this abomination and the tide began to turn as the mages and warlocks hurled their fire across the field, and warriors protected by priests and shamans raced each other to lock blades with the enemy.

During all of this, the Black Wolf Trevell pursued a goal of his own - to bring down a particular champion of the necromancer by the name of Tol of the Howling. This monster was responsible for some of the worst atrocities of Shile Tan's campaign, but he was a powerful warrior and tool of the necromancer. Trevell was still pursuing Tol during the final battle during which the necromancer's army was finally scattered and destroyed. The battle raged for three days and nights and many great warriors sold their lives there dearly.

Towards the end of the second day, the forces of Trevell and Tol met on the field. On spying his adversary, Trevell fought his way through the battle field to reach him, forcing his own guards at times to run to keep up. Likewise when Tol saw Trevell, he abandoned whatever vile purpose his master had set him and turned to meet Trevell.

During the ensuing fight, the heat from their battle forced those around them to stand back from the fray. Throughout the second night, the remains of Trevell's men fought on by the light of their battle, such was its intensity. On the dawn of the third day both were growing weak and still no nearer a result.

Meanwhile, Shile Tan was himself becoming hard pressed by Lord Wolf. The necromancer was forced to throw his remaining forces in the path of Lord Wolf, whilst he moved to escape the field. Hearing the call of his master to quit the field, Tol broke away from his fight and sped away from Trevell, but Trevell would not give up. After coming so close to his foe, he vowed that he would allow him no rest. The ragged remains of Trevell's men were exhausted, not being driven by any oath of vengeance, but they staggered on after their leader as he pursued his sworn enemy from the field of battle.

That was the last anyone heard of Tol of the Howling, Trevell the Hasty, and the Othlar. Stories maintain that Trevell still pursues Tol, day and night, even now. Others tell that the two met and battled to their deaths on some forgotten battle field. The truth perhaps may never be known for definite.
